New York Dodges Huge Snowstorm, but City Is a Ghost Town

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- New York City residents woke up to inches of snow this morning, not feet. Amid apocalyptic warnings of a "historic" and "life threatening" snowstorm, the world's financial capital turned into a virtual ghost town Monday night, stemming from the city's strict 11pm travel ban, which allowed only emergency vehicles on roads and shut down the city's subway system. The travel ban was lifted at 8am on Tuesday. Subway service will start at 9am. "By noon the system should be back to Sunday service, which is roughly 60% of the weekday service," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a Tuesday morning press conference. Trading will resume as usual, as the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and NYMEX remain open. Reporting on economic data, including durable goods and new-home sales, will be delayed, the Commerce Department said. The reports will only be posted on the department's Web site. As for corporate earnings, luxury retailer Coach said it will reschedule its second quarter fiscal 2015 earnings to 7am on Thursday due to the weather. Other northeast cities weren't as lucky as Manhattan. Some 15 inches of snow fell on New York's Long Island and upward of two feet in the Boston area, though snow totals are still being reported.
